Computer Labs

Social Ecology Computing Labs

There are three computer labs available in the School of Social Ecology:

  • Social Ecology I 101, 30 computers (1 station with a scanner attached) with 1 LaserJet Black & White printer and 1 Color LaserJet printer. (View lab schedule)
  • Social Ecology I 134 , 8 computers with 1 LaserJet Black & White printer (Drop-In ONLY) (View lab schedule)
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBSG) 4200, 22 computers with 1 Teacher Station in a lectern and 1 LaserJet Black & White printer. (View lab schedule)

Software for all three labs include: Windows XP Professional, Adobe Reader, Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), FireFox, Internet Explorer 8, ArcGIS, SPSS, SAS, Stata, and Stat Transfer 7.

Installation of software on any Social Ecology lab PC is prohibited. These machines have been set up to meet the needs of all classes and graduate students.  Please check the Open Access OIT lab schedule for software available in their labs.

Lab Hours

All three computer labs are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No key is required to enter from 8:00am until 8:00pm.

Accessing Social Ecology 101 and 134 after hours: You will need both a key to the Social Ecology I building and a key to the 101/134 lab in order to access the labs after 8:00pm and before 7:00am on weekdays, weekends and holidays.  The same key is used for both labs.

Accessing Social and Behavioral Sciences 4200 after hours: You will need only the key to the SBSG building to access the SBSG 4200 lab.

Keep in mind that both Social Ecology I 101 and Social and Behavioral Sciences 4200 are our main instructional labs. When classes are in session, please use other computer labs.  You may find information about when the labs are occupied by checking online lab schedules(SE I 101, SE I 134, SBSG 4200), and the LCD screens located in the lobby of Social Ecology I and on the fourth floor of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Other Computing Labs: Ofice of Information Technology (OIT) has opened an open access lab on the "Garden Level" of the SBSG building.  This is the closest open access lab to our School.  For more information, please check out UCI Open Access Labs.

Print Credit Policy Change

Lab PrinterAs many of you are aware, the California budget has had a major negative impact on our daily operations.  Unfortunately, we are forced to do our part; we are cutting back on printing in our computer labs.

Starting immediately and until further notice, we will be reducing free printing in the labs to 500 pages per quarter (this is half of what the prior allocation was).
This will apply to all Social Ecology graduate students, Social Ecology Honors students, and Social Ecology Mentor/Mentee students.

Any questions about cost per page or what can be printed see our policy:

Print Credits

Lab PrinterRules

Graduate students are provided with a limited amount of free printing in the Social Ecology labs, which may be used for academic requirements ONLY.  This includes printing final copies of paper assignments, research reports, MA theses, and Ph.D. dissertations. Printing resources should not be used for personal use nor TA work. Printing hard copies of research materials, iterative drafts, and statistical analytic output should be done sparingly. Print credits in the computer labs should also not be used to print course reading materials that are viewable on the web.

Amounts

Each student is given $50 worth of printing credits per quarter. Printing on the black printer is $0.10 per page; Printing on the color printer is $1.00 per page. This means you may print 500 pages of black and white, or 50 pages of color, or some combination of both. There is an icon labeled "print balance" on the desktop of each lab machine that allows you to check your current print balance. At the start of each quarter all accounts are reset to $50.

Please do not make multiple copies of documents on the printers and use the color printer sparingly. Usage of these printers is tracked and monitored.  Sorry, we do not allow the purchase of more credits, please use wisely.

Problems

Any printing problems in any of our Social Ecology labs should be reported to us at se.computing@uci.edu for the fastest possible
service.  Any lost credits due to printer hardware problems will be re-credited.  Please report those incidences ASAP to Social Ecology’s Computing Services at this same email.

Accounts: Research

Research accounts are usually set up by Faculty members, shared by a group of researchers and do not generally have print credits.

To login use your assigned login ID, password, and in the third field select "SOCECO."

If there is a need to reset the account password or any other related requests, please ask the appropriate Faculty member to contact Social Ecology Computing Support for the reset.
