Graduate Students

Poster Application

Each Graduate Student receives one free poster per academic year. To request the use of the plotter, complete the following:

  1. Review "Creating your poster with Microsoft Powerpoint".
  2. Have your advisor email support@soceco.uci.edu stating that he/she approves the poster request.
  3. Complete and submit the application below.
  4. Please allow 3 business days to schedule your request.

Plotter requests are subject to the rules below:

  • Be sure to bring your file on a USB Flash drive, have it available on your M: drive, or send it via the online application form.
  • There are no "rough drafts". You are limited to one (1) printed poster of size 42"(wide) X 36"(tall).
  • Use the standard Windows fonts (Times New Roman and Arial work fine)
  • No backgrounds. Backgrounds make the poster more susceptible to fingerprints and scratches, and are very expensive to print.
  • Color: It is important to note that printed colors will be less vivid than those that you see on your computer monitor. As a rule, dark colors will print darker.
  • If there is a printing problem caused by our staff or equipment (printer error) we will re-print the poster.
  • Reprint requests due to typographical, layout, or other errors not related to our staff or equipment will be denied.

Editing your Grad Student Web Profile

Turnitin.com

turnitin.comTurnitin.com is a web-based plagiarism prevention and detection tool. Student work is checked against a database for any matches between submitted papers and any internet content or previously submitted work. If you are an instructor considering using Turnitin, contact Ashley Vikander for instructions on setting up an account for your class.

Scantron Grading Instructions

Print Credits

Lab PrinterRules

Graduate students are provided with a limited amount of free printing in the Social Ecology labs, which may be used for academic requirements ONLY.  This includes printing final copies of paper assignments, research reports, MA theses, and Ph.D. dissertations. Printing resources should not be used for personal use nor TA work. Printing hard copies of research materials, iterative drafts, and statistical analytic output should be done sparingly. Print credits in the computer labs should also not be used to print course reading materials that are viewable on the web.

Amounts

Each student is given $50 worth of printing credits per quarter. Printing on the black printer is $0.10 per page; Printing on the color printer is $1.00 per page. This means you may print 500 pages of black and white, or 50 pages of color, or some combination of both. There is an icon labeled "print balance" on the desktop of each lab machine that allows you to check your current print balance. At the start of each quarter all accounts are reset to $50.

Please do not make multiple copies of documents on the printers and use the color printer sparingly. Usage of these printers is tracked and monitored.  Sorry, we do not allow the purchase of more credits, please use wisely.

Problems

Any printing problems in any of our Social Ecology labs should be reported to us at support@soceco.uci.edu for the fastest possible
service.  Any lost credits due to printer hardware problems will be re-credited.  Please report those incidences ASAP to Social Ecology’s Computing Services at this same email.

Creating your poster with Microsoft Powerpoint

  1. Create your poster to actual size. Use Page Set-Up 42"(wide) X 36"(tall) (42" X 36"). This way you can view your file at actual size (100%) to verify resolution and quality.
  2. Overly complex posters created in PowerPoint can have display and printing issues. You will have less problems if you use fewer layers and keep your design simple. Adobe Illustrator is recommended for more complex designs, but note that Adobe Illustrator is not available in our computer labs.

WebFiles

Webfiles is a file storage system provided by Network & Academic Computing Services (NACS) to faculty, staff and graduate students at UCI. The system provides 1 Gigabyte of disk space that allows you to store copies of important documents (e.g. homework, notes, papers, theses, dissertations, graphics). In addition to storing private files, you may also use this space to publish a personal home page and collaborate with colleagues.
