Critical vulnerability in older Windows systems

Windows 7There was a flaw on Windows 7 machines that was discovered.   Microsoft released a patch in their May update batch to fix it. Since the flaw is considered to be a high risk the individual patch fix for that flaw has been release as a stand-alone install.

You can check to see if your UCI owned Windows 7 machine has already received and installed the May 2019 Security Update from Microsoft by following the steps below:

  • Click on the Windows logo button on the bottom left of your screen.
  • Click on “Control Panel”
  • A window will appear. Go to the top right and under “View by” select “Category”
  • Click on “System and Security”
  • Under “Windows Update” select “Check for Updates”
  • Click on “View Update History” and a new window will appear.

If you see “2019-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4499164)” The computer has already been patched. If you do not see this update please continue to the below instructions.

Standard Support Users

If you are a “Standard Support” user and your computer(s) are used and located on campus please email se.computing@uci.edu with a day and time we can apply the patch fix. The fix does require a restart, any and all work not saved will be lost once we start the process.

Laptop Users

Social Ecology laptops have an “installONLY” user by default.  This user account will allow you to install this patch fix. Save all work and log into “installONLY” download the patch fix.

    • Click on the “Download” button next to “2019-05 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4499175)”

    • A window will appear.  Click on “windows6.1-kb4499175-x64_3704acfff45ddf163d8049683d5a3b75e49b58cb.msu”

    • Download to desired location.

    • Locate the file and double click to launch.  Follow the prompts and at the end it will require a restart.

Limited and No Support Users

Log in with your administrative account, if you are not already logged into it. Be sure to save all work since the fix requires a restart.
