Out-of-scope support

Welcome to the Social Ecology Computing Services website. We provide information technology, facilities, and support to help the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine meet their learning, teaching, and research goals. For assistance, you may find answers here on our website or contact our office. Submit a request via our website or contact our office by calling (949) 824-8202 or email se.computing@uci.edu.

IT at UCI

In addition to your SE Computing office, UCI has a separate, large central computing organization called the Office of Information Technology (OIT).  Many central services provided by OIT are free (basic networking and wi-fi, Duo multi-factor authentication, Canvas), others are offered as paid services (telephone services, some server hosting, research VM server hosting, etc.).  You can visit OIT's site for their contact information and posted hours.  If you have any questions about who to turn to, please email us, and we would be happy to help direct you to the correct contact.

Campus-wide service outages from their offices are reported at https://status.oit.uci.edu

Who we support

Faculty: Support exclusively for the School of Social Ecology's current and emeritus faculty.

Staff: Support exclusively for the School of Social Ecology's staff.

Graduate Students: Assistance is provided in support of faculty research labs/projects.  Assistance also provided with any SE lab accounts for grad students, or TA's teaching in our SBSG 4200 Computer Lab.
*SE Computing may provide additional support for dissertation defense presentations when feasible.  Please reach out and ask.

Undergraduate Students: SE Computer Lab account help for students taking courses in our computer lab (SBSG 4200).

What we support

Equipment: Support is provided for UC Irvine-purchased equipment only. Support for UCI-owned equipment located off campus can be done remotely.  We apologize, but cannot support home wireless networks - please consult your internet service provider for help.

Hardware Repairs: Computing Services will diagnose and troubleshoot hardware problems regularly while while providing support, but defer hardware repairs to the manufacturer.  Dell has an on-site repair service (usually 24 hours) that will come direct to campus.  Apple support is direct from the Apple Store.  Unfortunately, SE Computing Services is not an authorized Apple repair center.

Warranty Requirement: Warranties are required for all computers.

Research Support: SE Computing is here to help you with your research needs. See our page dedicated to research computing here.  We will do our best to identify your research needs with available resources at the school or campus level, or alternatively help with the selection and purchase of additional resources. Faculty are encouraged to contact SE Computing as early as possible when planning research with technical components. Please email se.computing@uci.edu to schedule a consultation.

Purchasing

SE Computing is available to help with computer hardware and software purchases for UCI use. We help ensure that equipment and software will meet the needs and requirements of individual use cases. All faculty and staff should consult with computing services before purchasing computing equipment or software.  If you need to purchase software, please complete the campus-required software procurement form to submit along with your internal SE PO form and submit it to your department purchaser.

Buying computer equipment

Faculty are provided with startup funds when they first arrive at the School. Faculty are expected to use some of these funds for their computer and research needs. Later, faculty can use some of their Research and Travel (R&T) funds to purchase new computer equipment after their startup funds expire.  For more in-depth specifics on hardware purchases, see our purchasing equipment page.

Faculty involved with research that requires specialized or additional computing equipment are responsible for finding funding (through grants, departmental funds, etc.).  SE Computing is here to help with quotes for computers, as you see fit.  We can help you stay within budget, and work with you to meet your technical, and software needs.

Staff are provided with a PC laptop for hybrid work.  These computers will be upgraded approximately every 4-5 years and are under warranty. This staff setup comes with one dock, one external charger (for home use), a mouse, a keyboard and one external monitor.  While in the office, a Xerox copier is provided for printing.  For any other needs, please ask your department manager.

Buying Software

The campus requires reviewing all software purchases to ensure adherence to security and accessibility requirements. SE Computing can assist with installing, using and common troubleshooting our Standard Software titles. For specialized software or unusual use cases, please fill out the required campus software procurement form to submit it along with your internal SE PO form and submit to your department purchaser.

SE's Standard Software

Microsoft Office (also available online through your M365 account)

Adobe Acrobat Pro (SE Faculty & Staff)

BigFix (OIT patching software)

Google Chrome

Firefox

Microsoft Edge

Cisco AnyConnect VPN (for laptops)

TeamViewer (SE's remote support software)

Zoom

Faculty and researchers are responsible for purchasing any other software licenses they require, using a KFS account (purchases made with personal funds or credit cards may not be reimbursed). Please consult SE Computing for all software purchases to ensure you are following all applicable policies and procedures, and getting the best deal, including educational discounts.

Printing

The school provides each department with a Xerox multi-function printer. If needed, a faculty member may purchase a personal printer with their funding, and a staff member may request a personal printer (with department head approval and funding). Computing Services is available to help with quotes for purchasing, and will perform basic troubleshooting (e.g., clear paper jams). Any additional required service (toner, imaging drum, service kits) is the responsibility of the owner/vendor.

BYOD (Bring your own devices)

SE Computing Services does our best to help guide visitors with viewing UCI email and configuring wi-fi access on non-UCI-purchased devices. Owners must maintain their patching, security, and other updates.

Email Lists

SE Computing maintains several email lists for sending emails to different groups within the school.

New Lists:  We can help guide you with new lists to groups/departments/centers within the School of Social Ecology.  The requestor needs someone to administer their list (respond to add/remove requests and approve or deny emails sent to the list).

Training

SE Computing Services provides training on the use of computers or software on a one-off basis. Some specific software titles are available via a campus agreement with Udemy for users with specific training needs..

Website Information
SE Computing handles the technical back-end structure of the School's many websites, as well as SE's affiliated Master's Programs websites.  SE Communications is lead on all content, news, and structure of these main sites.  For help with content on our websites, please reach out to CommunicationsPlease visit our helpful page if you have other questions about SE's websites.
